<![CDATA[Research Associate in Atmospheric Dynamics for High-Altitude Autonomous Platforms (SS13809)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13809 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13809 Applications are invited for an exciting and dynamic Postdoctoral Research Associate position in Atmospheric Dynamics for High-Altitude Autonomous Platforms, working with Dr Neil Hindley at the VR成人视频’s Centre for Climate, Adaptation and Environment Research (CAER).

The successful candidate will work on STRAT-NAV, a £2m research project exploring how atmospheric gravity waves can be predicted, navigated and exploited to extend the flight times of high-altitude platform systems (HAPS) operating in the stratosphere.

VR成人视频 the project

High-altitude platform systems (HAPS) are autonomous aircraft designed to operate in the stratosphere, above commercial aviation, where they can provide long-endurance communications, sensing and monitoring capabilities. However, many current HAPS aircraft face serious power limitations at UK latitudes during winter, when solar power is at a minimum.

Our project, STRAT-NAV, will explore the opportunity to overcome these limitations by using atmospheric gravity waves as a source of lift. Just as gliders soar on waves in the lower atmosphere, stratospheric HAPS can reduce their power consumption by navigating through gravity wave updrafts, avoiding downdrafts and regions of turbulence.

Our project will combine km-scale meteorological modelling, atmospheric wave dynamics, optimal routing methods and field observations to enable HAPS platforms to predict, navigate to and soar on gravity waves, especially during winter when stratospheric gravity waves are strongest over the UK.

Delivery of STRAT-NAV will involve closely collaboration with our project partners including , , and .

This role forms part of the research programme, funded by the UK's . Backed by £50m, this programme explores the opportunity space for high-altitude autonomous atmospheric platforms operating in the stratosphere as part of an effective and economical UK communications network.

VR成人视频 the role

The successful candidate will use high-resolution dynamical atmospheric modelling and mathematical routing algorithms to investigate how HAPS aircraft can navigate through atmospheric gravity-wave fields.

In Year 1, the candidate will determine the maximum HAPS energy saving opportunity from gravity wave soaring, using km-scale stratospheric modelling and idealised routing algorithms. They will then take part in a UK field campaign, scheduled for winter 2026/27, where we will use intensive radiosonde balloon observations to validate the waves in these meteorological model forecasts and thereby evaluate the viability of this gravity wave assisted HAPS routing technology.

In Year 2, the candidate will apply their gravity-wave forecasting and routing capability to real HAPS test flights in the field, working with and other HAPS developers as part of the wider ARIA programme.

In Year 3, the candidate will refine the forecasting and routing capability across multiple HAPS platforms and assess its operational and commercial viability

VR成人视频 You

We are looking for a strongly self-motivated, independent and innovative researcher who enjoys solving new problems. You will be comfortable working in a small team, collaborating closely with external partners, and contributing to a fast-moving applied research programme.

This role would particularly suit someone who enjoys both technical computing and practical fieldwork. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to intensive observational campaigns, sometimes working to tight schedules in field conditions, as well as developing and analysing numerical models and routing methods.

You will have a PhD, or equivalent experience, in Physics, Mathematics, Meteorology, Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline.

You should also have strong programming and computational skills, including ideally Python and/or MATLAB, some familiarity with Bash and UNIX-based systems and handling large datasets.

We are especially interested in candidates with one or more of the following:

 • experience in high-resolution atmospheric modelling;
 • experience with atmospheric dynamics, gravity waves, weather forecasting or numerical weather prediction;
 • experience with UAV, aircraft or vehicle routing algorithms;
 • a strong mathematical background that could be applied to optimal routing, trajectory planning or dynamical systems;
 • experience working with observational atmospheric datasets;
 • enthusiasm for fieldwork and applied, interdisciplinary research.

You do not need to have worked on HAPS before. We welcome applications from candidates with relevant backgrounds in atmospheric science, applied mathematics, physics, engineering, aerospace systems or adjacent computational fields.

Further information

This is a full-time position for 12 months in the first instance, with possible extension to 24 months and then to 36 months, depending on the evolving development of the wider programme and project funding.

For candidates who will shortly complete their PhD, a lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Neil Hindley (nh351@bath.ac.uk).

<![CDATA[Specialist Technician (SS13812)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13812 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13812 VR成人视频 the role

You will join a highly engaging and supportive environment as part of our Physics Technician Team, working at the heart of a department that continues to evolve and grow. This is a temporary role, providing short-term technical support to the Department, and we will provide appropriate training and development opportunities to help you succeed quickly and make a meaningful contribution during your time with us.

As part of our technical team, you will support the Department of Physics by providing high-quality technical and electronics expertise across our teaching and research laboratory spaces. Working in a collaborative environment across multiple buildings, you will contribute to the smooth running of laboratory activities, with particular responsibility for the maintenance, fault-finding, and repair of electrical and electronic equipment.

You will work closely with academic and technical colleagues to develop and construct teaching laboratory equipment and experimental setups, supporting activities across a range of year groups where required. You will also play an active role in supporting a semester of undergraduate teaching, working with students in laboratory settings to help them carry out experiments safely, develop practical skills, and make effective use of equipment.

A significant part of the role will involve providing bespoke electronics support to research laboratories, including the design and fabrication of custom analogue and digital circuits and equipment to detailed specifications. Depending on your experience, you may also contribute to the development of software for instrumentation and measurement systems (for example using LabVIEW), or support projects involving 3D printing or CAD design for both teaching- and research-based activities.

VR成人视频 you

You will bring a scientific or technical background, and while a degree in Electronics or Physics would be an advantage, this is not essential. What matters most is a practical, problem-solving approach, strong electronics knowledge, and the ability to apply this effectively in a laboratory or research environment.

Experience working with electronic systems, laboratory instrumentation, or bespoke equipment in a technical or research setting would be particularly valuable. Alongside strong hands-on electronics experience, an interest in supporting teaching and helping students develop practical laboratory skills will be important for this role.

We’re looking for someone who can demonstrate:

 • The ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively to meet deadlines.
 • Clear and effective communication skills, with the confidence to engage a range of colleagues and students as needed.
 • A collaborative approach, working well within the technical team and with academic staff.
 • An awareness of health and safety compliance; experience producing risk assessments or COSHH documentation would be an advantage.

If you enjoy solving technical problems, creating practical electronic solutions, and contributing to the effective delivery of teaching, research and laboratory activities within a dynamic academic environment, we would be excited to hear from you.

Further information

This is a full time (36.5 hours per week) fixed term role until March 2027.

For an informal conversation about the role, please contact the Technical Manager for Physics, Jenny Williams (j.williams@bath.ac.uk), or the Technical Director, Daniel Lou-Hing (delh20@bath.ac.uk).

We invite applications for an exciting opportunity in the Centre for Photonics at the VR成人视频. The role is available for up to 7 months as a Postdoctoral Research Associate position to develop advanced optical fibre technologies for ultraviolet (UV-C) quantum key distribution (QKD) in satellite communication networks. This well-resourced and collaborative project is led by the University of Bristol, with partners at the Universities of Strathclyde and York and Fraunhofer UK, and aims to extend the security benefits of quantum communication to a truly global scale.

Working closely with our collaborators, you will contribute to the development of a hollow-core optical fibre designed to operate in the UV-C spectral region (100–280 nm). The fibre will act as a mode-filtering solution that ensures secure quantum key distribution without disturbing the polarisation encoding—addressing one of the most challenging aspects of satellite-based quantum communication systems.

You will design, fabricate, and characterise hollow-core fibres that are single-moded at UV-C wavelengths and exhibit temperature- and stress-independent polarisation behaviour. Your work will draw on the VR成人视频’s research-grade optical fibre fabrication cleanroom and state-of-the-art photonics laboratories. The project offers an opportunity to expand your expertise in fibre fabrication, UV photonics, and quantum technologies, and to contribute to the development of a pathfinder platform for future global quantum networks.

VR成人视频 you

You will hold (or be close to completing) a doctorate in experimental photonics, quantum optics, or a closely related discipline. Strong experimental skills and a solid understanding of optical waveguides and light–matter interactions are required. Experience with optical fibre fabrication, hollow-core fibre, or ultraviolet photonics will be advantageous but is not essential.

The Centre for Photonics is a collaborative research environment of around 50 academics, researchers, and postgraduate students. The Department of Physics at the VR成人视频 is a research-led department committed to providing a supportive and inclusive workplace. We strongly encourage applications from groups typically under-represented in UK physics departments.

Further information

This is a full time (36.5 hours per week) fixed term role with an expected start date of September 2026 until March 2027.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr Kristina Rusimova (k.rusimova@bath.ac.uk).

As a member of Research Staff at the VR成人视频, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to Research Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

<![CDATA[Research Associate (SS13806)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13806 /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13806 VR成人视频 the role

The Department of Chemistry is seeking a Research Associate for a 6-month post as part of the BBSRC / STFC funded BIOSCENT (Bio-Inspired Optimisation of Surfactant/fragrance Chemistry by Exploitation of Novel Technologies) – a project to redefine sustainable laundry formulation.

The project:

BIOSCENT is a collaboration between the VR成人视频 and Unilever plc, including STFC Hartree and Diamond facilities, aiming to advance the fundamental science of fragrance delivery in detergent systems, a key driver of consumer experience. The key challenge is to understand how detergent molecules, including more sustainable biosurfactants, organise and interact with fragrance molecules, in different parts of the fabric washing cycle; and to translate these mechanisms into practical formulation design rules. The project targets these goals using cutting edge experimental and computational methods, with the ultimate aim of replacing petrochemical surfactants with biosurfactant alternatives, and reducing fragrance oil required, through more efficient delivery. As Unilever is one of the largest global producers of laundry products, the advances in this project can make a real difference in lowering environmental impact of the home care sector.

VR成人视频 you

We are looking for a researcher in physical chemistry / soft materials, to lead the experimental workpackage at Bath in the laboratory of Adam Squires (PI). The work will involve development of new experimental methods and models to understand the self-assembly of biosurfactants; their interactions with fragrance molecules in micelles and on surfaces; and the energetics and kinetics of adsorption, encapsulation and release of fragrance molecules as influenced by the surfactants.

The researcher will devise and carry out experiments using small-angle X-ray scattering, in the VR成人视频 and the Diamond Light Source, for structural characterisation of micelles in solution and layers on surfaces. These will be combined with complementary techniques using QCM-D and GC-MS headspace analysis to quantify adsorption on to surface and release into vapour respectively, to build up a thermodynamic model to understand the processes underpinning fragrance behaviour in laundry processes.

The project includes two visits to the Diamond Light Source (B21 and labSAXS beamlines) and collaboration with scientists at Diamond and Unilever.

The researcher will design experiments; obtain, analyse and interpret data; and present the work in seminars, conferences and publications.

The role will also involve working with the other scientists in the research group (3 PhD students; undergraduate project students), and helping to maintain a supportive, respectful and inclusive working environment.

As a member of Research Staff at the VR成人视频, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year

You must hold a PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline. Applicants who have submitted a thesis in this area and have not yet had their viva will also be considered.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in one or more of the following areas:

Specific / Technical:

 • Small-angle X-ray scattering
 • Surfactant self-assembly
 • Soft matter / formulation

You should also be able to demonstrate ability in:

Research Skills

 • High level scientific writing and presentation
 • Data analysis and modelling (coding advantageous)
 • Independent project planning and delivery

Broader Skills

 • Ability to learn new techniques quickly
 • Problem solving
 • Collaborative teamworking
