The Faculty of Engineering and Design requires a highly skilled, adaptable, and self-motivated skilled engineer to provide technical support to the Mechanical Services Machine shop.
The successful applicant should have experience in machining and manufacturing parts using a variety of conventional and CNC machine tools.
The role supports a variety of interesting projects from student automotive race teams including electric powered vehicles and our electric motorcycle team, as well as providing both technical and manufacturing support to our various research laboratories.
We will, however, provide training and development opportunities if you, have limited experience. In the event that you feel that you fulfil some, but not all of the criteria mentioned, we would very much encourage your application.
Knowledge and experience of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and CNC machine tool programming would be an advantage, but training will be available if necessary to develop these skills.
The post is offered on an open-ended full time (36.5 hours per week) basis.

]]>Based in the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, the Technical Specialist in Construction Material Science will provide expert technical guidance and support to facilitate research and teaching activities on materials science for construction materials, including adoption of existing guidelines and testing methodologies for studying a range of cementitious materials (Portland and non-Portland cements), as well as materials characterisation techniques and approaches to evaluate cement’s properties.
This includes advising on the suitability of, and assisting with, the development of experimental protocols and procedures considering teaching and research needs. The post holder will also provide technical support for experimental equipment usage and maintenance, as well as supporting safe material procurement, handling, storage and disposal.
You will take a proactive role in ensuring high standards are maintained in the management of health, safety and compliance throughout the department. This will include process improvement and the promotion of best practice in laboratory spaces in line with environmental legislation, the University’s Climate Action Framework and other related initiatives.
You will have a passion for helping others, for working in a higher education environment, and supporting ground-breaking research. You will assist in the smooth and efficient running of teaching and research laboratories, with a strong focus on the promotion of, and compliance with, health and safety.
This is a student-facing role, so the post-holder needs to be confident working and communicating with a diverse student (Undergraduate and Postgraduate) population. You will be instructing and supervising students in the safe operation of laboratory equipment during both timetabled sessions and while conducting research projects.
