Following a meeting of University Council yesterday (Monday 8 January), Professor Phil Taylor has been appointed as the next Vice-Chancellor and President of the VR成人视频.

Professor Taylor is an internationally leading researcher and industry expert in energy systems, electrical distribution networks, smart grids, and energy storage integration and control, who has worked in industry and academia for more than 25 years.

Currently Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at the University of Bristol, Professor Taylor has been deeply involved in building multi and interdisciplinary research strengths and with REF preparations. He leads the 拢10m EPSRC Supergen Energy Networks Hub at the University of Bristol and until May 2022 he was Director and Co-Director for the 拢20m EPSRC National Centre for Energy Systems Integration. He is also the Senior Responsible Owner (SRO) for Isambard-AI, a 拢225m investment from the Government to create the UK's fastest AI Supercomputer.

In 2022, Professor Taylor was appointed by the Government鈥檚 Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government鈥檚 Net Zero Innovation Board and became Chair of the Board for the GW4 alliance of the universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter. Professor Taylor is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Fuel Poverty Charity, National Energy Action. Additionally, he is a Visiting Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Prior to joining the University of Bristol as Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, Professor Taylor was Head of the School of Engineering at Newcastle University, where he led the development of the curriculum and teaching methods in the School to enhance the provision of quality education and a strong student experience. He also held the Siemens Chair in Energy Systems. As well as serving as Deputy Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor at Newcastle, he played an instrumental role in the creation and development of Helix, a new urban quarter collaboration between the University and the City.

At Durham University, Professor Taylor co-founded the multidisciplinary Durham Energy Institute, and led the UK鈥檚 largest Smart Grid project, the 拢54m Customer Led Network Revolution. Whilst at Durham University, he held the 脴rsted Chair in Renewable Energy.

Professor Taylor holds a BEng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Liverpool John Moores University and an Engineering Doctorate and Post Graduate Diploma in Management Sciences from the University of Manchester.

Professor Taylor has also had extensive experience in industry, including at GEC Alstom, EPS (UK), Teradyne and Senergy Econnect, where he was Research and Development Director. Key achievements include developing diagnostic software for the automotive and aerospace sectors and designing the grid connection for the UK鈥檚 first commercial offshore wind farm. He is currently a non-executive director of Northern Powergrid.

In appointing Professor Taylor as the next Vice-Chancellor and President, the University鈥檚 Remuneration Committee has agreed a salary of 拢280,000. There is no bonus entitlement.

Professor Taylor will take up his position on 1 August 2024.
