Monica Greco was appointed Head of Department of Social & Policy Sciences in December 2023.
Research
Monica鈥檚 research is transdisciplinary, at the intersection of social and political science, history, and philosophy, with an empirical focus on knowledge practices in psychosomatic medicine. Her interests include:
- medical and psychiatric nomenclature, classification, diagnosis
- the problematic of 鈥榤edically unexplained symptoms鈥� and related conditions
- concepts of health, illness, and therapeutics, particularly in relation to the construction of subjectivities and problems of (self-)governance
- medical humanities as an epistemic project
- the concept of 'life', vitalism, arts of life
- dynamics of change and transformation across bio, psycho, and social levels

Publications
Career
Before joining Bath in 2023, Monica was Head of the Department of Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Education
Monica studied History (BA) and Critical Theory (MA) at the University of Sussex.
She gained her PhD in Social and Political Sciences from the European University Institute in 1996.
