VR³ÉÈËÊÓƵ: Digital

Our digital research investigates the effects of technology on our lives, informs government policy, and makes technology safer for everyone.

Research that matters

Our research delivers real impact to help change the world for the better by focusing on three research areas: Sustainability, Health and wellbeing, and Digital.

How Bath Digital Research Is Changing Everyday Life

Digital research from the VR³ÉÈËÊÓƵ is helping people use technology in more meaningful and accessible ways.

How Bath research into psychology, digital behaviour, and pain is supporting the health of children and young people

Researchers at the VR³ÉÈËÊÓƵ are pioneering solutions to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people. From tackling chronic pain and reducing self-harm to supporting mental health, autism inclusion, and healthy behaviours, their evidence-driven work is shaping better futures through innovative interventions and collaborative research.

Bath research is helping businesses innovate for the future

From boosting crop yields to addressing issues around hydrogen storage and sustainable manufacturing of aircraft parts, and supporting workers with dementia, our academics are making innovation work for business and industry.

The United Kingdom has a productivity problem. Since 2008’s global financial crisis sent economies spiralling, the country has experienced slower productivity growth than comparable nations – and lower than its historic average increase of around 2% per year.

While solving the issue will take dedicated investment and attention from politicians, Bath academics are supporting innovation at all levels – from new products to the policy that enables them.

Bath research presented to the government's Chief Scientific Advisor

Professor Dame Angela McLean, the government's Chief Scientific Advisor, visited the University in January 2025.

The visit from Professor McLean was an opportunity to demonstrate how research at the University focuses on solving real-world scientific and policy challenges. During her time on campus, she was shown work by researchers from around the University, including:

  • Bath Institute for the Augmented Human, which develops technology to enhance and improve the physical and cognitive abilities of individuals
  • , which aims to make the UK a more innovative, safe, secure, and resilient digital society

Shaping social policy through digital security research

Meet the researchers working with government and industry to make technology safer for us all.

Technology pervades every aspect of our lives, from how we access our bank accounts, to how we track our health, to how we build and maintain relationships.

Our Institute for Digital Security & Behaviour (IDSB) brings together researchers from across the University. Its members are deeply engaged with a wide range of real-world issues in their research and partnerships.

'Our research puts people at the heart of digital security. We want to help [create] a more innovative, safe, secure and resilient digital society, to develop the next generation of leaders in digital security and behaviour, and to help advance the UK as a global leader in this domain.' — Professor Laura GE Smith, Co-Director of the IDSB

Tackling the global supply chain crisis

The Centre for Smart Warehousing and Logistics Systems (SWALOS) at Bath brings together researchers with a strong interest in solving real-life challenges faced by industry, policymakers and society.

Our logistics research is:

  • speeding up cancer treatment
  • improving vaccine supplies
  • cutting airline delays
  • streamlining warehousing and delivery
