This information is for the 2026 to 2027 academic year.
You are expected to maintain a reasonable standard of cleanliness and hygiene in your bedroom and any shared living spaces. This helps protect your own health and wellbeing, supports your household's welfare, and ensures you are complying with the University Code of Conduct.
We recognise that everyone has different standards when it comes to cleaning. The guidelines below outline your responsibilities, the support available from ResLife, and what may happen if standards are not maintained. ResLife staff provide advice on communal living and carry out regular accommodation checks, offering support where needed.
If you share a room, bathroom, kitchen, or lounge area, we recommend organising a cleaning rota with your household. What this looks like will vary depending on factors such as your housemates' routines, the size of your kitchen or flat group, individual physical and mental health needs, and the layout of your accommodation.
Living in a shared environment may be very different from what you are used to, and a little extra effort is often needed when several people are using the same spaces. How this is achieved is for housemates to agree together, and some compromise and cooperation may be required to ensure shared spaces remain pleasant for everyone.
Your bedroom
You are responsible for keeping your bedroom clean and tidy by:
- opening the window regularly to let fresh air in
- removing condensation from the windows
- vacuuming or sweeping regularly
- keep floor space clear
- removing general waste and recycling
Vacuum cleaners can be borrowed from your ResLife Ops team.
We check bedrooms regularly. If your room is below an acceptable standard you will have one week to improve. If cleanliness standards raise health, safety, or welfare concerns, other University departments may be informed and further action may be taken.
If there is no improvement, our staff will carry out a full deep clean, which you will be charged 拢50 for.
You will be given a date and time of when the deep clean will take place.
Your ensuite bathroom
You are responsible for keeping your ensuite bathroom tidy and cleaning it regularly. This should include:
- mopping up any excess water from the floor
- wiping down the sink, surfaces and shower
- cleaning the toilet
- checking drains for hair or build up
- sweeping or vacuuming the floor
Shared Bathrooms
To ensure a hygienic shared living environment we aim to provide a weekly cleaning support in your shared bathrooms.
It is your responsibility to keep the shared facilities clean and tidy in between the weekly cleaning support. You should take any waste and recycling to their kitchen bins. Sanitary bins are serviced separately and emptied monthly by a contractor.
The kitchen
You and your household are responsible as a group for cleaning the kitchen. You should:
- recycle as much of your rubbish as possible
- wash, dry and put away any washing up straight away
- keep surfaces, worktops and windowsills clear and clean, use the cupboards provided
- keep the dining room table tidy and clutter free, so everyone can use the space
You should regularly wipe and sanitise:
- worktops
- oven front and hob
- inside microwave
- sink and draining board
- door and cupboard handles
- bottom shelf and handles of fridge and freezer
- dining room table
If the cleanliness of your kitchen falls below the required standard, you will be given seven days to improve it and support on what needs to be improved.
If there is no sufficient improvement within this time, our staff will carry out a full deep clean to return the accommodation to the required standard. You will be informed of the date and time the clean will take place.
The cost of this cleaning service is 拢35 per resident and will be charged to the students residing in the accommodation.
Your hallway
You must keep your hallway and fire escapes clear. Anything blocking these could be a potential hazard in the event of an emergency or fire. Items left in your hallway may be removed.
Living Lounges
If you have a Living Lounge in your accommodation, it is your responsibility to make sure it is left in a clean and tidy condition after you have used it.
ResLife Operations Team
Your ResLife Operations team will conduct a weekly check in your accommodation.
If your accommodation falls below the expected standard, we will work with you to improve it through the following process:
- Stage 1: Guidance from ResLife Operations Building Coordinators on the actions required to improve standards. This may be provided verbally or by email.
- Stage 2: Escalation to ResLife Operations Team Leaders or other relevant teams, depending on the issue. An investigatory meeting may be held to discuss concerns and identify actions for improvement.
- Stage 3: Students may be required to complete a Moodle awareness course (depending on the issue). Continued breaches may result in charges for a reset clean and/or disciplinary action under the Code of Conduct.
