Available courses
These courses are available for members of the public, although not every course is available every term.
Stage 1.1: For complete beginners.
Stage 1.2: If you've completed Stage 1.1 or can:
- use basic structures/vocabulary related to greetings, introductions, family, numbers, food
- form simple sentences using verbs in the present tense, basic question forms and negations
- engage in simple conversations
Spanish In Your Suitcase: Prepare for a stay in a Spanish-speaking place. This course provides essential language skills to interact confidently in various work and leisure situations. It focuses on developing listening/speaking skills through interactive activities and is ideal if you have completed a beginner Spanish course with us. Students who are self-taught are also welcome. We cover:
- how to greet people and introduce yourself appropriately in different contexts
- how to get around (asking for directions, buying tickets for transport)
- how to have a pleasant stay (hotels, shopping, making payments, ordering food)
- aspects of tradition and culture in Spain
Spanish Refresher (equivalent to CEFR level A1): If you've begun studying Spanish and want to brush up your knowledge to progress to Stage 2. Enrol if you have:
- studied Spanish at Key Stage 3 (Year 7, 8, 9) but not sat a GCSE
- undertaken independent study covering the vocabulary and grammar of CEFR A1 level
Elementary (Parts 1/2):  The content of Stage 1.2 in a more relaxed way over two terms. Enrol if you completed a Spanish Post Beginner course in 2024/25 and want to progress to Stage 2.1 with a less-intensive learning pace.
Stage 2.1: If you've completed Elementary Part 2 or Stage 1.2, have Grade 4-6 in Spanish GCSE or equivalent, or can:
- engage in conversations and understand short recordings on familiar topics
- write short texts on familiar topics, including past events
Stage 2.2: If you've completed Stage 2.1, have Grade 4–6 in Spanish GCSE or equivalent, or can:
- interact with a degree of fluency and accuracy in common social situations
- understand texts on non-abstract topics and give opinions
- write longer texts on a variety of topics, including past events and future plans
Stage 3.1 (equivalent to CEFR level B1.1): If you've completed Stage 2.2, have a Grade 7–9 in Spanish GCSE, or can:
- interact with a degree of fluency and flexibility in common social/professional situations
- understand some detail of broadcast materials on topics of general interest
- write structured texts on a variety of topics
Stage 3.2 (equivalent to CEFR level B1.2): If you've completed Stage 3.1, have Grade C at AS level or equivalent, or can:
- describe past experiences with accuracy, talk about dreams, ambitions, and hypothetical situations
- understand simple news reports
- write structured texts on a variety of topics including simple news, experience and plans
Stage 4.1 (equivalent to CEFR level B2.1): If you've completed Stage 3.2, have Grade A–B at AS level or equivalent, have an A level or equivalent, or can:
- communicate in various situations, including some unpredictable and abstract topics, express opinions about current issues and formulate hypothesis
- understand and comment on simple news reports
- write about experiences and hypothetical situations with confidence
Stage 4.2 (equivalent to CEFR level B2.2): If you've completed Stage 4.1, have an A level or equivalent, or can:
- communicate clearly on a variety of topics, deliver an unscripted presentation with reasonable fluency
- understand and comment on most broadcast news with some support
- write about abstract topics and hypothetical situations with a good level of accuracy
Stage 5.1 (equivalent to CEFR C1.1): If you've completed Stage 4.2, lived in a Spanish speaking country, have CEFR B2/C1, or can:
- communicate clearly and confidently in a wide range of situations
- understand broadcast news and current affairs programmes
- produce extended pieces of writing on topics including hypothetical situations
Stage 5.2 (equivalent to CEFR C1.2): If you've completed Stage 5.1, lived in a Spanish speaking country, have CEFR B2/C1, or can:
- take part in debates and present an argument convincingly
- understand authentic broadcasts
- analyse complex texts and recognise implicit meaning
- produce extended pieces of writing on various topics that you research independently
DELE Exam Preparatory Workshops (A1/A2/B1/B2): Preparatory workshops for students who opt to sit for DELE qualifications. Held in the spring, they are free of charge to anyone enrolled in another Spanish course (not available as standalone classes).

Qualifications
You have the option of entering for the internationally recognised Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE) qualifications from A1 to B2 in the spring. To help you prepare for the exams, you can join , which are offered free of charge to anyone enrolled on another Spanish course; they are not available to join as standalone classes. If you would like to join the relevant workshop, please speak to your teacher after you have enrolled on your core course.
DELE exams take place at DELE examination centres. The closest of these to Bath are in Cardiff and London.
More ways to develop your Spanish language skills
We organise our own cultural events and Language Cafés. If you are enrolled on a language course, you are welcome to take part in all these activities; please ask your teacher for more details after you have enrolled.
